Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1/2 cup apple, peeled and diced (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

1 large egg

1/2 cup heavy cream (plus more for brushing)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Coarse sugar, for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon. Whisk the ingredients together until they are well integrated and no lumps remain.

Cut In the Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the bowl with the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some small pea-sized pieces of butter remaining for flakiness.

Incorporate Apples and Nuts: Gently fold in the diced apple and optional chopped walnuts or pecans, ensuring they are evenly distributed through the flour mixture without over-handling the dough.

Whisk Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the large egg, heavy cream, and vanilla extract until well blended and slightly frothy.

Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures: Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the flour mixture. Stir gently using a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. It’s important not to overmix; the dough should be slightly lumpy.

Shape the Dough: Lightly flour your work surface. Transfer the dough onto the floured surface and gently knead it 2-3 times just to bring it together. Shape the mixture into a round disc about 1-inch thick.

Cut the Scones: Using a sharp knife or a bench scraper, cut the disc into 8 equal wedges. Carefully place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each scone to allow for expansion.

Brush and Sprinkle: Brush the tops of each scone with a little extra heavy cream for a golden finish. If desired, sprinkle coarse sugar over the tops to add a delightful crunch after baking.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the scones for 15-20 minutes or until they are beautifully golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, allow the scones to cool on the baking sheet for a couple of minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely or serve warm. For an added touch, pair with clotted cream or your favorite jam!

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 35 minutes | Servings: 8 scones

                          - Presentation Tips: Arrange the warm scones on a rustic wooden platter, dusted lightly with powdered sugar or cinnamon for a touch of elegance. Add small bowls of jam and clotted cream on the side for a delightful serving experience.
