Ingredients

4 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup chilled unsalted butter, diced

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for topping (optional)

Instructions

In a large skillet set over medium heat, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix thoroughly to ensure the apples are well coated. Sauté for roughly 5-7 minutes, until the apples start to soften and release their juices.

While the apples are cooking, create the crisp topping. In a mixing bowl, blend the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Stir well to combine.

Incorporate the cubed cold butter into the oat mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, blend the butter into the dry ingredients until the texture resembles coarse crumbs. If desired, gently fold in the chopped walnuts or pecans for an extra crunch.

When the apples have softened, lift the skillet off the heat and evenly sprinkle the oat topping over the apple mixture.

Return the skillet to the stove and lower the heat to low. Cover the skillet with a lid and allow it to cook for about 10 minutes, letting the flavors combine and the topping become slightly crisp.

After 10 minutes, take off the lid and evaluate the crisp. For a toastier topping, you can transfer the skillet to an oven preheated to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the top achieves a golden brown hue.

Once finished, take it off the heat and allow it to cool for a few moments. Serve warm topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for that extra cozy touch.
